A Video Game That Requires a Dr.’s Prescription
Imagine a world where the very technology often blamed for shortening attention spans becomes the cure for attention deficits. That future is here: in June 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted marketing authorization to EndeavorRx®, developed by Akili Interactive, making it the first-ever video game prescribed by doctors to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children aged 8–12.
This paradigm-shifting approach underscores a broader truth: video games aren’t mere entertainment—they’re powerful tools for cognitive growth, social connection, and skill development. At the Unified Esports League (UESL), we’ve long recognized the transformative potential of gaming for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). From building essential life skills to fostering confidence and independence, video games are a launching pad for possibility.
The Rise of Digital Therapeutics in ADHD Treatment
Traditional ADHD treatments—behavioral therapy and medication—remain invaluable. Yet digital therapeutics like EndeavorRx offer a complementary path. Designed to be played 25 minutes a day, five days a week, for at least four weeks, the game adapts in real time to challenge each player’s attention capacities. Controlled clinical studies involving over 600 children demonstrated a 36% improvement in at least one objective measure of attention, as assessed by the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA). Furthermore, in a pivotal randomized controlled trial known as STARS-ADHD, participants showed significant reductions in ADHD severity scores after consistent gameplay—findings published in The Lancet Digital Health highlight the potential of these “serious games” to reshape therapeutic protocols.
Professional Research: Serious Games and Cognitive Gains
Beyond ADHD, academic research has begun to chart video games’ broader therapeutic landscape. A 2021 systematic review titled A Review on Serious Games for ADHD classified and analyzed dozens of game-based interventions, concluding that serious games offer “great potential” for diagnosing and treating attention-related challenges in children. These studies reinforce that when designed with evidence-based frameworks, video games can meaningfully enhance cognitive control, working memory, and executive function—capabilities foundational to academic success and everyday independence.
Opportunities for the IDD Community
For individuals with IDD, the stakes are even higher. Access to adaptive, inclusive environments where every win—no matter how small—matters is crucial. Gaming provides:
Social Connection: Cooperative and competitive play foster peer-to-peer interaction, turning shy participants into confident team members.
Motor Skills + Coordination: Precision-based games strengthen hand-eye coordination and fine motor control in a motivating, low-stakes context.
Problem-Solving + Creativity: Puzzle and strategy titles encourage critical thinking and adaptability, transferable to real-world challenges.
Emotional Regulation: Games offer structured feedback and safe failure states, helping players learn resilience and self-management alongside their UESL coaches and peers.
These benefits align perfectly with UESL’s mission to empower neurodiverse gamers.
