Points, Progress + Pizza: A New Way UNIFIED Is Celebrating Growth
At our flagship Poway UNIFIED Technology Center, a new points program is turning everyday moments of sportsmanship, participation, kindness and growth into something our entire community can celebrate.
At UNIFIED Esports League, we're always looking for new ways to help our players grow.
Sometimes that means introducing a new piece of technology.
Sometimes it means adapting an activity to meet an individual player's goals.
And sometimes, innovation can be as simple as finding a new way to make progress visible, exciting and worth celebrating.
This summer, our flagship Poway UNIFIED Technology Center became the first UNIFIED location to introduce a new player points system designed to recognize the positive choices and contributions our clients make throughout the program day.
Players can earn points for showing good sportsmanship, demonstrating positive conduct, attending consistently, participating in activities, helping a fellow player and contributing to the supportive community we work hard to cultivate inside every UNIFIED Technology Center.
Rather than focusing solely on individual achievement, those points contribute toward a shared monthly goal - a Pizza party!
But behind that simple reward is something much bigger.
It's another way for our coaches to recognize progress as it happens—and another opportunity for our players to see how their individual choices can positively impact the people around them.
Making Progress Visible
Growth doesn't always arrive as one enormous breakthrough.
More often, it's built from small moments repeated over time.
It's the player who congratulates an opponent after losing a close game.
The person who notices another player needs help and steps in.
The client who arrives ready to participate.
The player who chooses encouragement instead of frustration.
The person who tries something unfamiliar.
The teammate who makes room for someone else.
Each moment may seem small from the outside.
But together, those moments can represent something extraordinary:
progress.
Our new points system gives coaches another tool for acknowledging these moments while helping players connect positive choices with their impact on the larger UNIFIED community.
Players can earn recognition for behaviors including:
Good sportsmanship
Positive conduct
Consistent attendance
Helping fellow players
Participation and engagement
Encouraging others
Demonstrating responsibility
Contributing positively to the UNIFIED community
Most importantly, success doesn't need to look exactly the same for every player.
UNIFIED serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with different interests, strengths, support needs and individualized goals.
For one player, meaningful progress might mean initiating a conversation.
For another, it could be managing frustration after losing a game.
Someone else may demonstrate growth by helping another player learn how to use a piece of technology.
Another may simply be showing up consistently and becoming more comfortable participating with the group.
The points may be shared.
The progress behind them is personal.
Progress looks different for every player. What matters is that we recognize it, encourage it and keep creating opportunities for more of it.
Goal Reached: Poway Earns Its First Pizza Party
Throughout July, our Poway players earned points by showing up, participating, demonstrating sportsmanship and helping create the kind of supportive environment we want every UNIFIED player to experience.
Together, those individual moments added up.
Poway reached its first monthly points goal.
And that meant one very important thing:
It was time for pizza.
To celebrate the accomplishment, we turned to a local San Diego County restaurant whose work within the disability community makes this particular pizza party even more meaningful:
Pizzabilities.
Pizza With Purpose
Pizzabilities isn't an ordinary pizza restaurant.
Behind every slice is a story about what can happen when a family sees a lack of opportunity and decides to create one.
Pizzabilities' story began with the Baker family and their daughter, Grace.
Grace has Down syndrome, and after graduating from high school, her family encountered a challenge that far too many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families understand:
Finding meaningful employment wasn't easy.
Grace loved people.
She loved pizza.
And her family believed she deserved opportunities to participate, contribute and work within her community.
So they helped create one.
Working with longtime restaurateur Ron Burner and his family, the Bakers developed Pizzabilities around a powerful purpose: serving great food while creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with special needs.
Today, Pizzabilities employs people with a range of abilities while welcoming the broader San Diego community into its restaurants.
Their philosophy can be captured in three words prominently shared by Pizzabilities:
Inclusive. Local. Built by you.
And we think that's something worth celebrating.
Why Inclusive Employment Matters
Meaningful employment can provide much more than income.
Work can create opportunities for routine, responsibility, social connection, independence, skill development and meaningful participation in community life.
And professional research demonstrates why expanding those opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities matters.
A 2022 systematic review published in the Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities examined research surrounding competitive integrated employment for individuals with IDD.
After screening more than 1,100 peer-reviewed articles and ultimately including 17 studies, researchers found strong evidence associating competitive integrated employment with positive economic outcomes and moderate evidence for positive psychological-health outcomes.
Another study published in the same journal examined quality-of-life outcomes among individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities experiencing competitive employment, work-center employment or unemployment.
Researchers found that individuals in competitive employment demonstrated the highest objective quality-of-life scores for material well-being, productivity and safety among the groups studied.
These findings reinforce an important idea:
Creating genuine opportunities to participate and contribute matters.
Not because every individual follows the same path.
Not because employment defines someone's value.
But because people with IDD deserve access to meaningful choices, opportunities and community participation just like everyone else.
Opportunity creates possibilities. Inclusion makes room for people of all abilities to participate, contribute and be recognized for what they bring to their communities.
Different Spaces. A Shared Commitment to the IDD Community.
At first glance, a pizza restaurant and a gaming + technology education program might not appear to have much in common.
But there is something we deeply appreciate about the work happening at Pizzabilities. It begins with seeing ability. That's something we believe strongly at UNIFIED, too.
Our players enter UNIFIED Technology Centers because they may love gaming, computers, virtual reality, graphic design, coding, simulation technology or simply want somewhere they can connect with people who share their interests.
Those interests create an opening for something much larger.
Inside our programs, players have opportunities to practice communication, teamwork, sportsmanship, emotional regulation, problem-solving, healthy gaming habits and social interaction—all while exploring technology in an environment designed to support the IDD community.
A game can become a conversation.
A challenge can become an opportunity to practice patience.
A multiplayer match can become an exercise in teamwork.
An interest in technology can become a new skill.
And a room filled with people who share your interests can become a community where you feel like you belong.
The environment is different from Pizzabilities.
The larger idea is familiar:
Create opportunities. Provide meaningful support. Recognize ability. Encourage growth.
Innovation at UNIFIED Is About More Than Technology
When people hear UNIFIED Esports League, it's understandable that they might first think about gaming.
PCs, Consoles, Virtual reality, Sim racing, Coding, Graphic design.
Technology is an enormous part of what we do. But innovation at UNIFIED has never meant simply having the newest equipment.
It means continuing to ask:
How can we use this environment to create better opportunities for our players?
How can we make participation more meaningful?
How can we encourage healthy habits?
How can we help someone practice a skill they're working toward?
How can we recognize growth that might otherwise go unnoticed?
How can we create more reasons for our players to support one another?
Our new points program is one answer to those questions.
It is a simple addition to the UNIFIED experience, but it reflects a much larger commitment to continually improving our programs around the people they exist to serve.
We want our clients and families to know that UNIFIED isn't a static program. We're continuing to learn. Continuing to adapt. Continuing to innovate. Because our technology should evolve. Our programming should evolve. And the ways we support our players should evolve, too.
The First Goal of Many
Poway's first pizza party represents much more than reaching a number on a points board. It represents hundreds of little moments that happened along the way.
Moments of participation. Moments of encouragement. Moments of sportsmanship. Moments of responsibility. Moments when one player chose to help another. And moments when our coaches had another reason to say:
We saw that. That mattered. Keep going.
Poway was the first UNIFIED Technology Center to introduce this new system, but we're excited about what we're learning from it and the possibilities for bringing this approach to more of our UNIFIED communities.
Because sometimes progress deserves a high-five. Sometimes it deserves a few extra points. And sometimes? It deserves pizza. 🍕
