Unified Social Club Grand Opening: A New Community for Adults With Special Needs in San Diego
A welcoming place to connect, play + thrive is opening its doors.
For many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, finding a place to spend time with friends is not always as simple as meeting at a restaurant, joining a neighborhood activity or going out for the evening.
The desire for friendship, recreation, independence + community is there. The accessible opportunities are not always there with it.
That is why we are so proud to introduce Unified Social Club, a new community created to help adults with special needs meet one another, enjoy meaningful activities + build friendships in a safe, friendly environment.
On Friday, July 24, 2026, families, participants, volunteers + community supporters are invited to celebrate the club’s official grand opening at the Mickey Cafagna Community Center in Poway.
What Is Unified Social Club?
Unified Social Club is a welcoming social and recreational community for adults ages 18 and older with special needs.
Its purpose is simple but deeply important: to give people a place where they can have fun, make friends + feel that they belong.
Club gatherings will bring participants together through accessible games, creative activities, music, conversation + shared experiences. The environment is designed to be safe, structured, supportive + comfortable, while still allowing each participant to socialize in the way that feels right for them.
The Unified Social Club is a vibrant space where adults with special needs can “connect, play, and thrive.” Planned activities include board games, card games, arts + crafts, digital art, sports games, karaoke + other social experiences.
These activities may look like simple moments of fun—and they should feel fun—but they can also create opportunities to:
Meet new people
Reconnect with existing friends
Practice communication in a comfortable setting
Discover shared interests
Build confidence in social environments
Experience greater independence
Become part of a consistent, supportive community
At its heart, Unified Social Club is not just a calendar of activities.
It is a place to be welcomed.
Why We Helped Start the
Unified Social Club
Through our work at UNIFIED Esports League, we have seen what can happen when individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given a supportive place to connect around shared interests.
A gaming session can become the beginning of a friendship.
A conversation with a coach can help someone feel understood.
A team can become a community.
Our UNIFIED Technology Center programs use gaming, esports + technology education to support social and emotional growth for children, teens + adults with IDD. Participants explore technology, practice teamwork, develop communication skills + build relationships within a structured program environment.
But we also recognized a larger need.
As participants grow into adulthood, they need opportunities to socialize beyond a traditional program schedule. They deserve places where they can meet friends, try something new, laugh, relax + enjoy an evening out—just as neurotypical adults regularly do.
Families have expressed the same need: more safe, dependable + welcoming social opportunities for their adult children.
Unified Social Club was created to help fill that gap.
It is an affiliate program that expands the broader network of support available to UNIFIED clients + families while welcoming adults from throughout the surrounding special needs community.
The club’s roots also extend far beyond a single organization.
Its story is connected to decades of relationship-building within the Poway special needs community. Parent Advocates for Special Services, or PASS, began in 1997 as a support network for parents of adults with developmental disabilities. Over the years, those meetings helped families exchange information, support one another + form lasting friendships. As their children became adults, the community began asking an important question: how could those adults have a social network of their own?
Unified Social Club grew from that question.
Every person deserves more than access to services. They deserve friendship, laughter, shared experiences + a community where they are genuinely excited to return.

Extending UNIFIED’s Mission Beyond Our Technology Centers
UNIFIED Esports League is a San Diego Regional Center-approved vendor providing gaming and technology education programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across San Diego + Imperial Counties.
Inside our UNIFIED Technology Centers, clients explore tools such as computers, gaming consoles, virtual reality, coding, graphic design, flight simulation + other forms of interactive technology. With guidance from IDD-trained coaches, those interests become pathways for practicing communication, collaboration, emotional regulation, problem-solving + healthy gaming habits.
Unified Social Club is a separate affiliate community initiative, but it reflects the same larger commitment.
Technology education matters.
Health + wellness matter.
Skill development matters.
And so do friendship, recreation + a sense of belonging.
Together, these opportunities can help create a fuller network of IDD and special needs support—one that recognizes the whole person rather than focusing on a single need.
